Newsletter Issue 3

July 2009

Dear De Stijl Friends

Good day from a very chilly Karoo, although the rain has been falling for a couple of weeks now - the area remains breathtaking and inspiring, a welcome break from the hustle and bustle of the city.

What's New?

We have realised that our area is full of talented artists, so our walls are going to become a revolving art gallery to showcase this talent.   Pop in for coffee and a browse, catalogues and price lists are available from reception.

Twinkle, Twinkle little star

In our last newsletter we mentioned we were about to be graded by the SA Tourism Grading Council, we have been and yes we did get our 4 - star grading that we expected.   We are very proud of the many people who have made this possible - we also look forward to showing our guests our faciltiies and giving each and every one a 4 - star experience. We are also now a Level 4 B-BBEE Contributor.   Congratulations to all.

Food and Flower Workshop

On Saturday 20th June, on a rainy Karoo day, we hosted two of the best Free State talents we know. Nico van der Walt, originally from Bethulie now in Johannesburg and DP Ferreira originally a Bloemfonteiner and now in Knysna showed us what the new trends are in pastry, sugar art and chocolate and of course flowers and table décor! Nico enthralled us with sugar art, right out of the top notch hotels of the world and DP quietly created masterpieces from flowers, fit for the Queen! 90 ladies and a couple of dedicated men enjoyed the day of inspiration and creativity with the presenters.   We will be hosting more such events, so keep your eyes on this space and your local paper.

    A Venue with a View

Our venue is becoming more and more well known in the Karoo area and we are hosting notable conferences and have bookings for two weddings in September!   At the beginning of May we hosted a very successful gathering for the Merino Konsortium, who had Dr Kobus Neethling as their speaker.   Dr Neethling is a highly acclaimed speaker and founder of the SA Creativity Foundation. Should you wish to host similar corporate events, please give us a call to see what we can arrange.

Have you booked your year end function? Why not surprise your colleagues and your boss and book your year end function with us? Our facilities can host up to 300 guests and we guarentee a unique function to top off the year. Make it special this year, give us a call to find out more, we will be happy to help.

Restaurant News

We are taking part in the Sparta Beef promotion currently running in restaurants across the region and have so far only had rave reviews for our unique dishes make with the superior beef!   Pop in and try our Sparta Fillet done in Black Pepper, Brandy and lemon, served with fresh vegetables. It's a great Sunday lunch!

Themba, our new chef - is no stranger to the Karoo as he comes from the highly acclaimed Waschbank Lodge, we caught up with him to find out a little bit more about him.

Philosophy on food? I believe food is not just something to fill your stomach, it has to feed the soul too so I appreciate the satisfaction from guests, it 's my inspiration. What makes de Stijl's food unique? We improve our standards daily to make our food unique - our food is clean and not fussy, we believe in truth to material - let each product speak for itself.   My favourite ingredient is garlic so I use it a lot, my favourite dish to make is slow cooked lamb shanks on garlic mash, roasted veggies with a red wine jus.   Of course I love eating, in summer it is a funky fresh salad, in winter a Thai curry and my all time best is Sparta Fillet done in Black Pepper, Brandy and lemon with fresh vegetables. What does Themba do on a rare Sunday off ? I spend time with my family, drink wine, braai and read the newspaper!

Our Team

We also have a new member of the team; Lieze du Plessis is responsible for the administration and implementing of new systems in the hotel, we had a chat to her too...

What do you love about your job? Here at De Stijl we have a wonderful team and the teamwork is good, so it is great place to work, it is a new project to be put on the map .   Where have you come from? I grew up in the Colesberg district and studied tourism before going to America to work, but my roots brought me back, so here I am!   I love movies as a hobby and think it is a blessing to be happy and thankful!

Bridal Show, Mimosa Mall

We will be at the Mimosa Mall Bridal show in Bloemfontein from 8 - 16 August 2009.   You are invited to come and see us, whether you are planning to get married or just want to see what we have on offer, you are welcome to come and see us.

That's all for July, we look forward to hearing from you soon or even better, seeing you!

Best wishes

Marcell
